Jobs for Dogs

We're always telling people who have certain breeds that their dogs need a "job", so I thought this would be a good place for people to tell how they gave their own dog a job that simulates what the dog was originally bred to do, or a substitute to burn off some energy.  How about this format: 1. dog's name & breed   2. bred for  3. job(s) you gave the dog...

Friday Photo: Remy The Australian Shepherd

Remy Australian Shepherd Dog Photo

Say hello to Remy! Remy (full name Remington) is an adorable pure bred Australian Shepherd. He was recently rescued from a Michigan shelter. The adoptive family is wonderful (we know them personally) and we know that Remy will get the best love, care and attention.

Remy is less than two years old, but he is very well behaved. Plus Remington is going to obedience training soon. We know that he will do great. Hooray for Remy!

Meet Sadie!

Sadie has received her first heartworm treatment and is doing very well. Shed love to have a home waiting for her when she has completed heartworm treatment. Sadie is a sweet red bi Aussie with a docked tail. She is an energetic girl that walks nicely on leash, rides well in the car and ignores cats. She is quickly picking up on basic obedience and just wants to please. Sadie can live with other dogs, but she does prefer a slow introduction and will growl and posture a bit when meeting a new dog. After a quick introduction period though, she is happy to share her space. Although she would be happiest as an only dog, she could easily live with a submissive male. She will be available in a few months when she has been treated. We met Sadie through Aussie Rescue and Placement Hotline in Georgia . These representatives work to ensure that you receive the support you need to bring an Australian Shepherd into your home. For more information about Sadie, click here!  read more »

Aussies vs. Border Collies

If anyone read my last post in General Chat, I wrote there that I was considering getting a GSP puppy to show. I've changed my mind, however, partly due to the size of the dog, and have decided to either get an Australian Shepherd or Border Collie. I am wondering if anyone can help me decide which would be best for me, so here's a little about my lifestyle/ the dog I would like...having always had setters, I know what high energy dogs are like, though I'm prepared for the other dog to be higher energy than the setters. Right now, my dogs each get a 20 min. walk in the morning before school, free access to the fenced backyard when someone is home, another approx. 30 minute walk in the afternoon or evening which usually leads us to a small nearby park where they can run and swim. Fetch, frisbee, etc included. :P We typically go to the dog park 2x a week (although maybe more now that the weather is nice and summer is approaching) where there is a dog beach/swimming area and huge fenced play area.  read more »

Meet Snow!

"Snow" is a pretty girl with slightly wiry hair, longish with the Australian Shepherd dappling and body ticking. She is great with other dogs and kids. She is not needy but very loyal to her human. Snow has been dewormed and has vaccinations started. No need for slim shots. She'll be an active pup, so you can get plenty of exercise.  read more »

Puppy with possible parvo

A friend of mine had to put her australian shepherd down recently because of some unexplained bleeding and fluid build up in the lungs.  She got a golden retreiver/ poodle puppy a few days later.  This was about a month ago.  Last week though a little after midnight her puppy started vomiting and having diarrea.  She took her into the emergency vet clinic and they tested for parvo but the tests came up negative however the puppy showed all the symptoms of parvo.  The puppy was never exposed to any dogs except her other dog, her sons and mine all of which have been vaccinated.  They ended up putting the puppy down at noon.  How accurate is the parvo test?  I always thought dogs got parvo from other dogs... I could be wrong though... I really don't know much about it.  Any ideas on what else it could be?
